Residue is the part of food that our bodies can’t digest. It helps form stools. Most residue is made up of fiber. Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grain breads and cereals. These foods are limited on the low residue diet. Residue also comes from some foods that are low in fiber, such as milk and tough cuts of meat. These foods are also limited on this diet.
As a low residue diet can’t provide a full variety of nutrients to maintain long term health, this diet should only be used for a short period of time.
Beverages: Carbonated beverages, coffee, tea, water, fruit flavored drinks, pulp-free fruit juice, Gatorade, PowerAde, crystal light, kool-aid.
Milk: yogurt (limit milk and foods containing milk to 2 cups per day)
Meat: Ground and well cooked tender beef, pork, ham, lamb, and veal, poultry, fish, organ meats, eggs and plain cheese
Breads: English muffins, white bread, white rolls, plain muffins, plain or egg bagels, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, donuts, flour tortillas, crackers without seeds, saltines, melba toast
Cereals: cream of wheat, cream of rice, malt-o-meal, farina, grits, refined dry cereals with corn, rice, and oat, or wheat, polenta.
Rice, Pasta, Potatoes: white rice, white flour, potatoes, sweet potatoes, semolina pasta
Vegetables: strained tomato juice, strained vegetable juice, Well cooked or canned vegetables: asparagus, beets, green/wax beans, eggplant(peeled), mushrooms, pimento, cooked peppers, spinach, pureed or canned tomatoes, tomato paste or sauce (no seeds)
Fruit: All fruit juice except prune juice, canned or cooked fruits: applesauce, apricots, bananas, cherries, cranberry sauce, fruit cocktail, grapefruit, melons, mangos, mandarin oranges, nectarines, peaches, plums, pears, raisins, rhubarb, and tangerines.
Desserts and Sweets: plain cakes and cookies, fruit ice, popsicles, pudding, custard, jelly, honey, Jell-O, sugar, sugar substitute, syrup, marshmallows, plain hard candy, jelly beans, gum drops.
Fats: butter, margarine, bacon, mayonnaise, gravy
Soup: bouillon, broth, or cream soup made with vegetables, noodles or rice that is allowed.
Condiments: salt, pepper, spices, catsup, vinegar, prepared mustard.
Foods Not Allowed
Beverages: any fruit or vegetable juice with pulp, prune juice
Milk: yogurt with berries, nuts, seeds. No more than 2 cups milk per day.
Meat: tough fibrous meats with gristle, cheese with nuts, seeds or peppers, peanut butter (all types) dried beans, dried peas, lentils, legumes
Breads, Starches/Crackers: any whole-grain, multi-grain, rye, pumpernickel, or bran products, any food with nuts, seeds, coconut, dried or raw fruit, corn bread, graham crackers
Cereals: any whole-grain or bran cereal, cereal with nuts, seeds, coconut, or dried fruit, oatmeal, granola
Rice/Pasta/Potatoes: wild or brown rice, whole-grain pasta, potato skins, popcorn
Vegetables: Raw vegetables, fresh, canned or cooked: artichokes, beet greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collard or mustard greens, corn, fresh green peppers, green peas, onions, parsnips, rutabagas, pumpkins, sauerkraut, fresh tomatoes, turnips, watercress, winter squash, zucchini.
Fruit: Raw fruit (ripe banana allowed), berries: blackberries, blueberries, boysenberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, raisins, prunes, dates, figs or any other dried fruit, prune juice.
Desserts and Sweets: any dessert or candy made with nuts, seeds, dried fruit, coconut, jam, preserves, and marmalade
Fats: nuts, seeds, olives, coconut, thousand island, poppy seed or other salad dressing containing foods not allowed
Soup: soups made with vegetables, noodles or rice not allowed
Condiments: relish, pickles, olives, chili or jalapeno peppers, picante sauce, nuts, seeds
