Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, refers to various surgical procedures used to help dangerously obese patients lose weight. Before patients undergo surgery, the doctors at GAFC work closely with the local bariatric surgeons to help manage some of the GI complications of obesity and to perform pre-operative endoscopies (see ‘Endoscopy’ to learn more about that procedure). Bariatric surgery is performed more and more frequently each year, and is a very safe procedure. There are, however, a number of potential complications and issues that occur after surgery that concern your gastroenterologist. The doctors at GAFC have been specially trained to recognize and treat many of these conditions. In addition, we are always on the cutting edge of learning new, exciting less invasive techniques for treating obesity, so be sure to ask your GI what’s new in the field of bariatrics.
